Everyone In Place

“So the service was prepared, and the priest stood in their places, and the Levites in their divisions, according to the kings’s command.”

2 Chronicles 35:10

With Passover and the feast of Unleavened Bread preparations, there was a great deal of organization required for the thousands of sacrifices that were to be offered to God in the following week. Everyone needed to be aware of his responsibility, being in his proper place in order for this huge celebration to go smoothly. Most weight of responsibility was upon King Josiah as he was at the helm directing it all.

The leader does not do all but he must be sure all is done well. For all to be accomplished as it should, the leader must learn the art of delegation. There is a saying “Many hands make light work.” Not only is the work load made easier, but most likely it will be finished much faster. In fact, there is a much greater benefit obtained by delegation — each one in the body of Christ is using his or her gifts, growing in those gifts, and being blessed in the serving of others. “As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God” (2 Peter 4:10).

Leadership is more about overseeing and being aware of the progress, carefully monitoring things toward the overall goal rather than having hands into the details. The challenge for many leaders is letting go of details and releasing others to do what he might possibly be able to do better. Things may not be done exactly as we would have done them, but that’s OK! Perfection is not the goal. Discipleship is the goal. To disciple we need to instruct and release others into their calling and gifting. If, as the leader, I chose to do all the work, or be so controlling that no one else has the opportunity to express their unique gifts and talents, then I am doing all a disservice.

Find capable men who are teachable and willing to follow instructions, but give them some flexibility. There are some things that have to be done a certain way but there are many things which may have room for individual expression. The goal of all our work is to bring glory and honor to God. It may not always turn out perfect for we are imperfect beings, so learn to be gracious as God is gracious and remember the goal is discipleship.

What things are you doing now that you can delegate to someone else?
