All and Every

“Thus Hezekiah did throughout all Judah, and he did what was good and right and true before the Lord his God. And in every work that he began in the service of the house of God, in the law and in the commandment, to seek his God, he did with all his heart. So he prospered.”

2 Chronicles 31:20, 21

What Hezekiah did for some he did for all. He made sure that all the priest and Levites throughout all the land were taken care of — that each family received the needed provision of food that they may continue to do the work of the Lord. “Throughout all” and “in every work” are words which carry the significance of what he, Hezekiah, did and how he did it. He cared for everyone under his rule of authority so that this move of God, this renewal of worship, would be sustained in every corner of Judah. What’s more, what he did he did with “all his heart”. This was a man who did the right thing with the right heart.

When it comes to the “how to” of leadership there could not be any better example in Scripture than we have in the life of Hezekiah here in this passage. As leaders we have the responsibility to fulfill our call, not to the bare minimal, but to the fullest extent and with excellence. We have the authority and responsibility to make sure that all under our care are well taken care of. We must do what it takes to get the job done. We must evaluate the needs, organize the resources, and motivate the people to do what we cannot do alone.

Yet there is more to leadership than being a good manager. We must do it with the utmost integrity (being true). We must do it with the intent of seeking God in every challenge and every plan or vision. We must do it with all our heart. That is, no doing things half way; no partial effort. We must not grow weary and give up but pursue our work until we know the job is done well. We must be sold out to the Lord in word and in deed. If we seek Him and His will with all our hearts we will be sure to prosper. We will see success in what we are trying to accomplish because God will bless it.

Ask yourself: “Am I doing what I do with all my heart?” Is there anything in your ministry which you might need to change as a result of Hezekiah’s example?
